What is ICT (Information and Communications Technology)?

Information Technology, simply IT is one of the most used terms since its inception. You may call it the ship that helps you sail across the sea unharmed, against all the odds that might come in the way. If that’s the way to define IT, then what is ICT? ICT is the broader version of IT, it comprises ships, navigation control, radar, stations, weather forecasting, harbor, etc. – a ‘whole’ concept.

I hope you realized my point. IT is an element of the broader term – Information and communication systems. A little comparison is brought in at first, to understand the difference before you proceed to understand in detail about ICT.

ICT Definition and Concept Explained

According to Wikipedia, “Information and communications technology (ICT) is an extensional term for information technology (IT) that stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications (telephone lines and wireless signals) and computers, as well as necessary enterprise software, middleware, storage and audiovisual, that enable users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information.”

It is the convergence of the above technologies and more. The audio-visual solutions, ELV & security solutions, etc. also comes under this umbrella term. The most important thing to consider is that this technology is evolving each and every day, maybe every hour.

Applications of ICT Solutions

Just like the definition I have presented to you, its applications are also broader. The technology helps many to bud new applications in many sectors like

  • Education
  • Corporates
  • Industrial uses
  • Military
  • Entertainment
  • Medical science
  • Finance
  • Public sector

Wonderful, isn’t it?
